Broadcast Journalism

At the National High School Journalism Convention early last semester, I took several classes on podcasts in the journalistic world and how to incorporate podcasts into your program. Although we have nice Rodecaster audio hardware now, few people in the program have used it this year, and I'm trying to bring podcasting back. I haven't taken a deep dive into broadcasting, but I'm certainly interested in learning more.

Instagram Promos

This I Believe Podcast

Right: BE A FRIEND: This podcast was one of the first pieces I ever produced, and it was a learning experience for everyone involved -- the podcast equipment is its own beast. However, I love the message that I got across, and I hope it's inspirational to others. Graphic by Anna Shaikun

Podcast

Left: BRINGING THE BANDLAB: In addition to my own podcast, I edited one by former Digital Editor-In-Chief Ireland McCage and former iliad Design Editor Eva Orbock. While I had to overcome some difficulties, such as BandLab being unable to edit more than 15-minute segments, I was able to edit the piece and pass it on. This year, I've taught a few people how to use the Rodecaster equipment, with one podcast currently in the works.

Summer Health PSA

This was a part of our staff's broadcast Team On-Site Production activity, where we won second place with me as primary script-writer and secondary on-air talent. "I've always loved to write scripts, so this was really exciting," Shaikun said. "We filmed different pieces all around town, including my dojo -- I got to flip my instructor." Video by OMG staff

Podcast Notes

Above: FLASH CAST: Anna Shaikun's notes from Professor Sherrod Blakely's National High School Journalism Convention session are shown. Blakely, who created a popular sports podcast, gave students a wide variety of tips to set up a regular podcast. "While the ODYSSEY Media Group has a podcast category on our website and a Rodecaster setup, they're severely underused," Shaikun said. "I've always wanted to start a recurring podcast, and Blakely's advice was incredibly helpful." Document by Anna Shaikun
