Photojournalism

I've always deeply admired our photographers on staff for their visual storytelling ability -- sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm not very familiar with a digital camera, but my advisor likes to remind us that we have a camera of sorts with us at all times -- the smartphone.

JROTC Military Ball

Left: EYE ON THE BALL: I wrote a preview on the JROTC Military Ball for my first beat of the second semester. Lieutenant Colonel McMickle invited me to attend the event, where I decided I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try a photo gallery. I took the photos on a smartphone, so they weren't the best quality. However, I had fun playing with angles and lighting and would like to get more comfortable with an actual camera to do more like this. Photos by Anna Shaikun

ATCHLEY SCENE

Right: BEDAZZLED: During the ODYSSEY Summer Workshop, I did a photoshoot with rising Journalism I student Peter Atchley. I got him comfortable enough to strike a pose, and I loved how this photo particularly turned out. We even won the "Most Drip" award at the awards ceremony later that week. Photo by Anna Shaikun

Rocktopus

Left: ROCKTOPUS: I've taken photos for a lot of my stories, but the one I most vividly remember is my story about the 3D-printed octopus with the face of actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, called the Rocktopus. I could take pictures of the Rocktopi and the Engineering III students making them as the Rocktopi were printed.
